Smart Specialisation Conference held in Zagreb

Zagreb, on 12 February 2013 Conference entitled  „Smart specialisation“was held in the Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb. The conference was organized by Ministry of Economy and European Commission with the aim of presenting the concept of smart specialisation within the context of Cohesion policy 2014-2020. 

Smart specialisation means identifying the unique characteristics and assets of each country and region, highlighting each region’s competitive advantages, and rallying regional stakeholders and resources around an excellence-driven vision of their future. It also means strengthening regional innovation systems, maximising knowledge flows and spreading the benefits of innovation throughout the entire regional economy. It will be a precondition for obtaining the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) support in the countries and the regions.

The Conference began with the speeches of the Minister of Economy, Ivan Vrdoljak, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds, Branko Grčić; Minister of Science, Education and Sports Željko Jovanović and European Commissioner for Regional and Urban Policy Johannes Hahn.

The biggest part of the conference was dedicated to the presentations given by international experts on concrete experiences in the design and implementation of smart specialisation strategies in Member States while the representatives of the Croatian ministries presented development of smart specialisation strategy in Croatia and its implementation. The final panel debate provided opportunities to outline some recommendations for the design and implementation of the smart specialisation strategy in Croatia.

The Conference gathered numerous audience, primarily policy makers at national and regional levels, representatives of ministries and economic sector as well as scientific-research institutions.
